Funky-shaped lil’ Quirrel - but a good figure nonetheless!
Quirrel, the dearly beloved, wise, brilliant, and humble pill-bug explorer and scientist of Hallownest, was depicted pretty well by this official mini figure designed by Colvin Collectibles. I love this character very much (second only to Grimm), so it’s nice to see him finally get an official figure.
These new HK mini figures are very well-made and sturdy; the resin is smooth and high quality, the paint job is very good, and the colours are accurate.
Quirrel is depicted wielding his long-nail, and holding a paw with his gracefully long, detailed segmented fingers up to adjust Monomon’s mask upon his head. He has a pretty good, accurately inquisitive look about him, as if he’s in the midst of his exploration of Hallownest. Overall, a nice little figure of dear Quirrel that I am happy with. He is also much bigger than I expected (see photo I included of this figure beside a standard coffee mug for comparison). He’s very stable on his stand, so he’s great for displaying - either in, or outside of his decorative box.
However, being very particular due to my affinity for Quirrel, I feel that his shape/design is definitely off in certain ways... He looks a bit deformed, and his legs are oddly short compared to his arms and his body. I think the four segments on his back (his shell’s plates) are a little too close together, and his arms are placed oddly lower than they should be. His shape rather is more like a Husk enemy, like Myla (Quirrel is not a Husk or beetle - he’s a pill-bug, a crustacean).
And... where is his lovely, plump roly-poly tummy!? Quirrel, being a pill-bug/roly-poly has a distinctly round, endearingly pudgy belly and is rather bean-shaped - but his belly is quite *flat* and looks weirdly pushed-in on this figure despite his accurately-placed tummy segments, and his whole body shape is definitely awkward compared to how he looks in-game. He sadly lacks the paunch that makes him so cute and “Quirrelly” - personally, the lack of that particular detail was very disappointing to me...
I have large 6-inch a fan-made figure of Quirrel that has the *proper* shape and is much higher-quality, and well... it kind of puts this one to shame (compared the two in one of the photos)...
However, I am happy to add this Quirrel mini-figure to my HK collection; it was an extremely good deal for a great-quality and very decently-sized figure, despite its funky shape.
Though, I’d appreciate if Colvin Collectibles tried again with a larger Quirrel statue perhaps? Please make his shape more accurate next time? (And make an official Grimm figure, please...)
