This weekend: Development kicks off!

My appointment got rejected by the lawyer like a 7th grader with acne, so my business machinations are on hold for the next few weeks. But that gives me time to work on designing and organizing, so that’s ok. Speaking of which, there’s an awesome puppy contest going on which will lead into an even more awesome contest — on Saturday I’m going to be launching a simple challenge/contest for any prospective developers who are interested in working on Fangamer. More on that after the jump, but first, some more excellent banners:

The Banner Contest entries continue to pour in — after this update there are still 50 entries to post. Crazy! Thanks again, even though it’s a chore to post all of these, I’m glad to put the time into it because it gives me warm fuzzies. That could have something to do with the dog putting her butt on me, I dunno.

The Shining Wonderful Ruby Challenge

Speaking of ‘the dog’, I’m featuring my awesome puppy in a contest I’m holding on the Fan Forum. The goal of the contest is to come up with a video game-style sprite of my welsh corgi, Ruby. She’s ultra cute, so if you feel like randomly creating a sprite of an adorable dog, take a shot at it! Here’s what we’ve got so far:

How awesome is that? 18 pixelized Rubies! :D The winning sprite will be used for a contest which I’m going to launch on Saturday, which as the title of this post alludes, will mark the beginning of Fangamer’s development! In a nutshell, we’re going to be holding a ‘qualifying’ contest to help us gather a team of motivated/awesome developers.

The reason I’m having a contest for a Ruby sprite, in case it wasn’t already apparent, is because Ryan has chosen to develop Fangamer with Rails, a framework which runs atop an ultra-neat programming language named Ruby. So earlier, when we said we were going to do things with Cake and PHP…well, cake was a lie. Sorry dudes.

However, that’s going to be part of the focus of this contest: to give you PHP developers a great excuse to stretch your engineering muscles and pick up an excellent new language. The contest, which will be called The Shining Wonderful Ruby Challenge, is going to be kind of a ‘qualifying exam’ for people who have never used Ruby+Rails before. We’re going to post an XHTML/CSS skeleton and some specs for a simple development task (a sprite database) — the ‘challenge’ will be to flesh it out in Ruby/Rails.

I’ll be providing more details on Saturday, but any developers who participate and are able to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts/principles which comprise RoR will become members of our development team and will have access to our Basecamp project management site, where the real work will happen.

Lawyer Delays

On the business front, I called The Law Offices of Axelcrushmachinegun on Tuesday hoping to have an appointment before Friday. Unfortunately, his secretary wasn’t sympathetic to my plans and kicked me to Jan 3. Lame. So then today I got a call telling me that they were going to have to postpone the meeting until the week after. Superlame. I really wanted to get this business stuff out of the way, so I’m not sure what I’ll do…

Anyway, I’ll be posting The Shining Wonderful Ruby Challenge on Saturday, so be sure to check back if you’re interested in web development and would like a chance to get your foot in Fangamer’s door early-on.

Um, it is Monday and there has been no challenge issued. Can I start on making a Mother 1+2+3 sprite database to get a head start? Using RoR of course. THIS IS GONNA BE AWESOME! *dives into coding at 12:46 in the morning*

Yeah, things got kinda hectic this weekend. I’ll show you guys this much for now…I’m still writing up a spec, so it might not be ultra-obvious what we’re going for here.
